Nearly 2,000 people in Durham Region have asked for help ending their homelessness, regional officials say, as the Region marked World Homeless Day on Oct. 10, according to the Region.

Most people experiencing homelessness in Durham are assessed as having mid to very high-acuity needs requiring multi-service supports to stay housed, according to the Region's data as of August. The Region takes a housing-focused approach in which shelters and services are pathways to permanent housing, with participants receiving wraparound supports at Beaverton Heights, Oshawa Micro-Homes and, soon, at 1635 Dundas St. E. in Whitby, where the second and third floors are being converted to supportive transitional housing units.

The Region says it has helped 435 people move into housing so far this year. Regional Chair John Henry said homelessness is complex but lasting change is possible when governments, health services and the community work together, adding that every person in Durham Region needs a roof over their head because it is a basic human right.
